Beaches at Armação de Pêra

Silves Beaches are located in the southern end of the region in Armação de Pêra.

Armação de Pêra is a former fishing village that was once popular among fishermen that came here to catch tuna and sardines and later sell them in the local markets. Although you can still spot a few fishermen hanging around the area, today, it is mostly the tourists that bring life to Armação de Pêra.

There are two main beaches in Armação de Pêra - Praia de Armação de Pêra and Praia Grande. Praia de Armação de Pêra is a quiet beach with a small sandy bay and calm waters that are perfect for swimming. Near the waterfront, there is a beautiful promenade lined with several terrace bars and restaurants that cater to all tastes.

The promenade leads to the fortress of Armação de Pêra, which was established in the 16th century to protect the town from pirate attacks. Inside the fortress, there is a small white chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony. Close to the fortress, you will find a small stretch of sand with a series of colourful fishing boats resting and waiting to be taken out to the sea. As most beaches in the Algarve, Praia de Armação de Pêra has an area where you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas and another section where you can simply spread out your beach towel and enjoy a bit of sun.

Right next to it, there is Praia Grande, meaning Big Beach in Portuguese. The beach is 3km long and its dunes stretch all the way back to Praia dos Salgados in Albufeira. Divided into two parts - the West side and the East side - Praia Grande is bordered by two wetlands, the Alcantarilha stream on the West and the Lake Salgados on the East. This last one is home to a variety of bird species, like the grey heron and the ringed plover. Praia Grande is one of the longest beaches in the Algarve and it’s often the place of choice for many families that visit Armação de Pêra in the summer.

Both of these beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag, not only for its great facilities but also for its incredible natural beauty.
