Fuseta

Fuseta or Fuzeta is a fishing town located along the lagoons of Ria Formosa in Eastern Algarve.

The town has around 2,000 permanent residents and welcomes most of its visitors during the summer season.

Fuseta has a very good transport connection with the rest of the Algarve. There is a regular bus service and a train that connects Fuseta to Faro and Vila Real de Santo António. While fishing is still an important part of Fuseta’s economy, tourism is slowly beginning to grow in the region, mostly due to its secluded beaches and camping parks.

The harbour of Fuseta is packed with colourful fishing boats and ferry boats departing to Ilha da Armona, one of the five sandbar islands of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Along the harbour, there is a beautiful promenade lined with cafés and restaurants offering Portuguese seafood.

You can also head to the market on Largo 1º de Maio and buy fresh fish directly from the local fishermen.

The beaches of Fuseta are a great alternative for anyone looking to avoid the crowded resort towns of the Algarve. Praia da Fuseta-Ria and Praia da Fuseta-Mar are the main beaches in Fuseta. Praia da Fuseta-Ria, also known as Praia dos Tesos, is the closest beach to the centre and can be easily reached on foot. This small beach is a favourite among families since it provides very calm and warm waters.

During low tide, you can walk along the estuaries and observe the local fauna up close, including waders, crabs and bivalves.

Praia da Fuseta-Mar, on the other hand, faces the Atlantic, so the water is slightly colder there. The beach is located on the east side of Ilha da Armona, extending for more than 4 kilometres. It’s possible to swim to Praia da Fuseta-Mar, but the best way to reach it is by catching the ferry boat from Fuseta to Ilha da Armona, which takes around 10 minutes. There is a watersports operator on the beach where you can rent a variety of sports equipment, including canoes, stand up paddle boards and surfboards.

If you head further to the east side of Ilha da Armona, on foot or by private boat, you will come across the deserted sandy stretch of Barra da Fuseta, where you can enjoy the natural pools exposed by the low tide.

One of the main events in Fuseta is the local flea market. The market is held on the 2nd Sunday of each month next to Fuseta's campsite and it's a great place to hunt for bargains.
