Aljezur beaches

Aljezur beaches - some of the best surfing.

Stretching along the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, the Aljezur beaches offer some of the best surfing in Portugal.

There is always a constant sea breeze on this side of the coast so the temperatures are slightly lower than in the southern Algarve. Some of the beaches are often affected by strong currents so make sure to check the colour of the beach flag before going for a swim.

The three main beaches of Aljezur are Praia da Arrifana, Praia Monte Clérigo and Praia da Amoreira.

Located 10 km away from the town of Aljezur, Praia da Arrifana is among the top 200 surfing beaches in the world and hosts a few competitions throughout the year. The beach has a large sandy stretch and is surrounded by black steep cliffs that help shelter it from the wind.

Close to the beach, there is an old fortress named Fortaleza da Arrifana, where you can get a panoramic view of the coast.

Praia do Monte Clérigo is very popular with families. The beach has clean water, easy access and excellent facilities, which is why it has been awarded a Blue Flag. When the tide is low, it creates natural pools and uncovers a variety of marine species like octopuses, crabs and starfishes.

The sea and the river come together at Praia da Amoreira. The beach is located at the mouth of Ribeira de Aljezur and is backed by sand dunes. Praia da Amoreira doesn’t have a concession area, so you’ll have to bring your own parasol.

Similar to Praia do Monte Clérigo, at low tide, there is a shallow lagoon on the beach of Amoreira where children can go for a swim. If you get hungry, there is a restaurant just above the beach that serves light meals.

Other beaches worth visiting in Aljezur include Praia de Odeceixe, Praia do Amado and Praia da Bordeira.

Praia de Odeceixe marks the boundary between the Algarve and the Alentejo. The beach is located near the Ceixe river and provides incredible views from the top of its cliffs. If you want, you can even rent a canoe at the beach and paddle up the river. Also, during the summer, there is a road-train that connects the Odeceixe village to the beach.

Praia do Amado is one of the most frequented beaches in Aljezur. The beach is located near the village of Carrapateira and is very famous among surfers, who come here to enjoy its changeable waves. If you want to learn how to surf, there are a couple of surf schools on the beach that provide lessons for all ages.

Usually, there is parking space available at the top of the cliffs, but it can get quite full in the summer with the camper vans of the surfers.

Also in Carrapateira, you will find Praia da Bordeira, a large beach surrounded by dune fields and a warm lagoon. The beach is 3 km long, so there is plenty of space to play around and practice sports like kitesurfing.
