Quarteira

Quarteira, once a small fishing community, has now developed into an extremely popular town for tourists and although it has become slightly commercialised still manges to retain its Portuguese character. Quarteira still has the pretty older area of the town and the lovely palm tree lined promenade with bars, cafés and shops where you can walk along the sea front running along the attractive stretch of golden beach which has ideal swimming conditions. The main attraction is the bustling fish and vegetable market located by the working fishing harbour, the Gypsy market every Wednesday and the road train which takes you along the seafont.

Quarteira still retains its local fishing community and the fishermen can be seen at work at the western end of the beach. Most of the fishermen's catch is brought at the fish market early in the morning by the top cafés and restaurants in Quarteira which are renowned for their fabulous fresh fish dishes.
