The primary settlements in Castro Marim date back to something like five thousand years BC, probably positioned on the hill in which the fortress at this point is. During this time Castro Marim was closer towards beach and most most likely an island. For hundreds of years it was a town for any ships sailing up the Guadiana River towards the precious metal mines towards the north.
Phoenicians in addition to Romans where situated right here, along with a Roman path connected this location with Lisbon, running in parallel to the Guadiana River and with access to Alcoutim, Mértola as well as Beja. There are evidences that while in the Moorish occupation a fortified construction existed, that had become the central fundations of the Castro Marim castle. As a result of strategic placement within the village on edge together with the kingdom of Castile, Castro Marim had become the headquarters associated with the by then, existing Order of Christ after the Christian reconquest. When the order afterward was transferred to Tomar an extended time period of lowering relevance and declining inhabitants started.
